Viriathus Drinks has a new drink to delight whiskey lovers. Kyrö Malt is the first Finnish single-batch 100% rye whiskey.
This whiskey was created by the Kyrö Distillery Company, a rye distillery in Finland. A group of friends wondered why there was no Finnish rye whiskey distillery, despite the grain’s widespread popularity. In this way the Kyrö Distillery Company was born in a former dairy.
The first fermentation of Kyrö Malt took place at the head distiller’s childhood home, while the parents were on vacation. Despite the initial improv, it didn’t take long for the distillery to receive critical acclaim. In 2014, the first drinks were served at a pop-up bar in Helsinki. After this initial demonstration, the first batch of whiskey rested in the barrels, and it was important to have something to sell right now. This is how gin production began and the relatively unknown distillery started to make a name for itself with this first experiment, Kirö Gin (formerly known as Napue). The gin was selected as “The World’s Best Gin for Gin&Tonic” at the IWCS 2015.
Today, Kyrö is a craft powerhouse that remains loyal to Finnish rye despite being a notoriously demanding grain to distill.
Kyrö Malt is the first single-batch Finnish rye whiskey made from 100% intense and spicy Finnish wholegrain rye. It is aged through dark winters and light summers in American white oak barrels and ex-bourbon barrels. Kyrö Malt offers an aroma of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit and earthy rye. In the mouth, notes of sweet rye bread, honey and wild berries stand out, while the peppery finish is complemented by notes of mocha and caramel.
This beautiful whiskey, double-distilled and aged in new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, was awarded Outstanding Gold at the IWCS 2020.
